SCHLAG: Schlag ran the muddy, hilly trails of Oahu’s Ko’olau mountains better than anyone, despite his ‘efficient’ and short stride, his feet barely leaving the ground. He greeted every person he passed—even those in cars—and somehow knew them all. Through him, I learned the true meaning of ‘lokahi,’ the Hawaiian value of balance in the physical, spiritual, and mental. If Coach Schlag was around, you could always spot him, thanks to the many bright, clashing colors he wore while running.
